Time to think about time

My dear friend and I were talking the other morning and the discussion turned to time.

How we use it.
How we squander it.
How we should value it a lot more.

How many of us put aside our dreams for a rainy day and focus on working for a paycheck?

We talk about our dreams
Envision our dreams
Share our dreams
Wonder about our dreams
Long for our dreams

But do we live out our dreams?  What does it take for someone to decide to go for their dream?  Money? Guaranteed success?  For most the answer is time.  How do we find the time to even begin?

There is a classic Christmas cartoon called "Santa Claus is coming to town" which features a catchy tune called "Put one foot in front of the other" sung by Mickey Rooney and Keenan Wynn. You can watch the video http://youtu.be/OORsz2d1H7s.  In the case of the Winter Warlock his dream is to go from being bad to good.  Santa advises him to just put one foot in front of the other and everything else will follow.

How many of us allow our past baggage to hold us back?  Let it go! Stop procrastinating.  Find the time to take at least one small step toward your dreams.  What are you waiting for?  It's not as if we have all the time in the world.

I realize most of us barely have time in our day to get everything we need to do done.  But we need to find the time to nurture our dreams.  It is important.  It is who we are.

The same goes for spending time with family and friends.  My friend and I were trying to make sense of how so many of us are unable to find the time to visit a loved one while they are still alive, yet we scramble to be at a funeral.  What is wrong with this picture?

I would rather spend precious time telling my loved one what they mean to me than talking to someone who cannot hear what I am saying.  Sadly, I too am guilty of this, but I have tried in recent years to change this pattern.  A family member once asked why don't we all gather more in celebration than in grief?  Good point.

Finally, it is never too late to start.  Time is a precious gift that keeps giving.  Every morning we get the chance to start all over. Twenty four hours are handed to us and we usually get to choose how we spend them.  So choose wisely because none of us know how much time we have been given.

Forget your age
Forget your past
Forget your failures
Forget your fears
Forget what people tell you.

Only YOU know where your foot needs to step next in order to achieve want you want most.  Don't be afraid to step into a mess or the unknown.  Just put one foot in front of the other and see where it leads you.  As the song points out "a good way to start is to stand."

Put one foot in front of the other
Mickey Rooney and Keenan Wynn

Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you’ll be walking cross the floor
Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you’ll be walking out the door

You never will get where you’re going
If you never get up on your feet
Come on, there’s a good tail wind blowing
A fast walking man is hard to beat

Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you’ll be walking cross the floor
Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you’ll be walking out the door

If you want to change your direction
If your time of life is at hand
Well don’t be the rule be the exception
A good way to start is to stand

Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you’ll be walking cross the floor
Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you’ll be walking out the door

If I want to change the reflection
I see in the mirror each morn
You mean that it's just my election
To vote for a chance to be reborn
